Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate
Also known as: SMCT, methyl cocoyl taurate
INCI name: Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate
What it does
An anionic cleansing agent made by joining coconut-derived fatty acids to N-methyltaurine. It foams and lifts oil and dirt, and is one of the most common replacements for sulfates in “sulfate-free” shampoos.
Benefits
Good foam and cleansing that hold up in hard water, and stable across a wide pH range. Generally regarded as milder than soap and the classic sulfates, though independent head-to-head data are limited.
Concerns & Risks
Still an anionic detergent, so it removes sebum and can dry very sensitive or damaged skin, and like other surfactants it stings the eyes. Published independent irritation data are sparse, so treat “gentle” claims with some caution.

Non-comedogenic (0)
