Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
Also known as: Cationic guar, guar HPTC
INCI name: Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
What it does
A guar-gum derivative given a positive charge so it clings to the negatively charged surface of hair. As shampoo is diluted and rinsed it drops out of the lather onto the hair, leaving it smoother and easier to comb.
Benefits
One of the main conditioning agents in conditioning and 2-in-1 shampoos: it cuts tangling and combing friction, and helps oils and silicones deposit on hair from a cleansing base.
Concerns & Risks
None well established; the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel considers guar derivatives safe as used. Heavier grades can leave very fine hair feeling weighed down.
