Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate

Also known as: Sodium N-lauroyl sarcosinate

INCI name: Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate

What it does

An anionic cleansing and foaming agent made from lauric acid and sarcosine, an amino-acid derivative. A common main detergent in “sulfate-free” shampoos — not to be confused with SLS.

Benefits

Cleans and foams well, and works with cationic conditioners such as guar to deposit them on hair. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel considers it safe in products formulated to be non-irritating.

Concerns & Risks

Still an anionic detergent, so it can dry or irritate a compromised scalp; “sulfate-free” does not automatically mean milder. Should not be combined with ingredients that can form nitrosamines.
