Borage Seed Oil

What it does

A plant oil unusually rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid involved in the skin's barrier and inflammation pathways.

Benefits

Emollient and barrier-supporting on dry skin, and small studies of topical use suggest it can ease dryness and roughness. Trials of oral borage oil for eczema were disappointing, so treat it as a good emollient rather than a treatment.

Concerns & Risks

Well tolerated on the skin. Polyunsaturated, so it oxidises faster than most oils — not a problem in a sealed, preserved cream.
